Wuzhen Water Town: Xizha or Dongzha, Day Trip or One Night?

Wuzhen is not one open old town. Its visitor experience is divided into ticketed scenic areas, chiefly Xizha (West Scenic Area) and Dongzha (East Scenic Area). The best plan depends less on how many gates you can enter than on whether you stay overnight for the quiet evening and early morning.

Ticket and lodging choices
The official site currently lists Xizha at RMB 150, Dongzha at RMB 110 and a same-day combined ticket at RMB 190. Tickets are generally valid for the stated day and entry conditions; confirm re-entry before leaving a gate. Prices and products can change, so use Wuzhen’s official website or ewuzhen booking platform.
Since March 2025, the official operator has advertised included Xizha admission for eligible guests staying at its in-scenic-area hotels and guesthouses, with exclusions and room-specific limits. Check the exact room product before assuming admission is included. This can change the value calculation for an overnight stay.
Getting to Wuzhen
Wuzhen has no central high-speed railway station. Tongxiang railway station is a common rail gateway, followed by a road transfer. Another bus or road approach may be better from your actual Shanghai, Hangzhou or Suzhou starting point. Check 12306 for the exact station name, then verify the current local bus or licensed taxi route on the day.

A one-night route that avoids backtracking
- Arrival: leave luggage through the accommodation’s stated process before entering the scenic area.
- Early afternoon: walk one side of Xizha’s main waterway, visiting only the museums or workshops that interest you.
- Late afternoon: pause rather than crossing every bridge; save a different bank for after sunset.
- Evening: experience the lit canals after day visitors thin out.
- Next morning: photograph quieter lanes, eat breakfast, then revisit one missed area before checkout.
Should you take a boat?
A shared boat is a scenic transfer, not a complete tour. The official Xizha product waits for up to eight passengers and currently lists RMB 60 per adult one way; private boats and child prices differ. Dongzha has its own route and pricing. Confirm the pier and destination because the boat may not stop on request without ending the ride.
Take the boat when it replaces a walk you do not need to repeat. Skip it if queues are long, visibility is poor or mobility during boarding is a concern. Never assume a boat ticket includes scenic-area admission.
Where to stay
Inside Xizha: best for evening and dawn, with managed luggage logistics; confirm the exact entry benefit. Outside the gate: more price choice and easier vehicle pickup, but you lose some after-hours atmosphere. Tongxiang station area: useful only for an early departure, not for experiencing the town.

Food, weather and walking
Eat beyond the first photogenic storefront. Check menu prices before sitting and ask about local braised dishes, freshwater ingredients and rice-based snacks according to your dietary needs. Canal edges, stone bridges and polished lanes can be slippery in rain. Summer humidity and holiday crowds make a two-zone sprint especially tiring.
Common mistakes
- Assuming Wuzhen is a free public old town with one entrance.
- Buying both zones without enough hours to appreciate either.
- Booking an outside hotel while expecting included scenic-area admission.
- Arriving at Tongxiang station without a last-mile plan.
- Leaving Xizha before night when evening atmosphere was the main reason to visit.
- Relying on an old boat fare or pier timetable.
Wuzhen versus nearby destinations
