Longmen Grottoes: A Practical First-Visit Guide from Luoyang

Longmen Grottoes is a linear heritage landscape on both banks of the Yi River south of Luoyang. The mistake is treating it as one statue: the visit works best as a one-way sequence along West Hill, across the river, and through selected East Hill viewpoints rather than repeated backtracking.
How much time do you need?
Allow four to five hours for a deliberate first visit. Three hours is possible if you stay on West Hill and skip optional extensions. A full day suits visitors who read displays, photograph details and include East Hill, Xiangshan Temple and Bai Garden. The official site lists West Hill Grottoes, East Hill Grottoes, Xiangshan Temple and Bai Garden within the daytime area.
Book the official product and bring the same passport
The scenic area uses real-name, timed reservations. Use the official Longmen Grottoes website or its official booking channel, enter the foreign passport exactly as printed and carry the original document. The official site currently displays a standard daytime price of RMB 90 and seasonal admission windows, but prices, night products and last-entry times can change. Recheck the official page on the day you book.
Getting there from Luoyang
Luoyang Longmen railway station is the useful high-speed rail gateway. The official scenic-area guide estimates about 10 minutes by taxi and identifies bus 71 as a direct option; live traffic and route changes can extend that. Luoyang Beijiao Airport is farther away; the official guide estimates roughly 40 minutes by taxi. Do not schedule a flight immediately after the visit.
Follow a route that matches the terrain
- Northeast or northwest service area: walk to the checkpoint or use the currently operating electric cart.
- West Hill: move south along the densest cave sequence and save energy for the stair approaches.
- Fengxian Temple: spend time viewing the monumental group rather than photographing only the central figure.
- River crossing: decide whether East Hill adds value before committing more steps.
- East Hill and Xiangshan: use wider views to understand the relationship between caves, cliffs and river.
- Bai Garden: finish here only if time and energy remain.

When to visit
Early entry generally gives cooler walking and more schedule buffer. Afternoon light and river views may be attractive, but never trade the official last-entry cutoff for a photograph. Summer heat, winter cold, rain and holiday crowds materially change the route. Wear shoes with grip and carry water from a trusted source.
Accessibility and family planning
The riverside spine is easier than the stepped cave approaches, but the full experience is not step-free. Ask the scenic area which viewpoints and electric-cart segments are operating before committing. Families should set a meeting point and keep children away from edges and congested stairs.
Where to stay in Luoyang
Stay near Luoyang Longmen station for a short rail-based stop; stay in the central city if you want evening food and other Luoyang museums or historic areas. - Arriving without a timed reservation and original passport.
- Assuming every cave is open under every conservation condition.
- Spending all energy on minor stairways before Fengxian Temple.
- Adding East Hill automatically when a fixed train leaves soon.
