Lijiang Dayan Old Town: A First-Visit Guide to Lanes, Waterways and Staying Overnight
Last checked: 13 September 2026. This is a guide to Dayan Old Town / 大研古城, the central old-town area in Lijiang. It is not a combined itinerary for the snow mountain, Tiger Leaping Gorge, Baisha and Shuhe. Give Dayan a day and, if your schedule permits, a night: the important decisions are where to arrive, how to get a suitcase to your room, and which part of the walk you want to understand rather than merely photograph.
Understand what you are visiting
UNESCO's listed property has three components: Dayan, including Black Dragon Pool, plus Baisha and Shuhe. They are not interchangeable hotel locations. This article stays with Dayan. Look beyond shop signs at the arrangement of buildings and water. A Chinese Academy of Social Sciences account of Lijiang's trading-town history explains the connection between the Mu residence area, the watercourses and Sifang Street's role as a commercial centre. It offers a better lens for a walk than treating every lane as an interchangeable photo backdrop.
Choose your accommodation by the last few hundred metres
Before booking, ask the property to send two pins: the room or reception, and the closest legal vehicle drop-off. Then ask for the walking route between them. Is it uphill? Are there steps? Can someone meet you with luggage, and is there a charge? A hotel name containing “old town” or “panoramic view” does not answer any of these questions.

Arrival: name the pickup point, not just “the old town”
If arriving by train, use the exact station on your ticket and agree the onward transfer with your accommodation. A railway booking does not include transport to your inn. For flights, keep the arrival airport and the old-town pickup as separate stages. We have not verified a current airport-bus timetable or a fixed car fare for this guide, so do not plan around a price copied from an old social post.
Before setting off, save your hotel's Chinese address and contact details, confirm where the vehicle is allowed to stop, and tell the host your arrival time. If a driver cannot reach the door, you already have the agreed meeting plan. On departure, reverse the process and include the time to carry bags out—not just the driving time displayed on the map. Maintenance fees: separate the rule from the checkpoint
The municipal maintenance-fee rules effective from 1 August 2025 specify RMB 50 per paying visitor, valid for 365 days, with repeat entry during validity subject to verification. Read the reproduced text of the municipal rules. The document contains exemptions; do not assume that a concession described online applies to your nationality or documents.
We could verify that published rule, but not a current map of collection points or today's on-site collection procedure. Budget for the fee and ask the official visitor service how to pay and retain proof. Do not interpret the absence of a barrier as a fee exemption, and do not assume the maintenance receipt covers every separately operated attraction. Avoid transferring money to an unsolicited personal payment code.
A first walk with one cultural anchor
The plan below is an editorial allocation of time, not a measured route or a claim that venues open at these hours. Check the visitor map when you arrive and keep your accommodation pin available. You can follow it in reverse if your confirmed drop-off is on the other side of the town.
- Orientation around the waterwheel landmark: allow roughly 20–30 minutes to locate yourself, identify your exit and look at how the water passes the street frontage. Do not block a bridge while reviewing photographs.
- Continue to Sifang Street / 四方街: allow about an hour for the connecting lanes and the centre. Choose one side lane to explore instead of following every promising turn. Remember a signed junction as your return point.
- Choose a cultural stop rather than another shopping loop: consider the Mu residence, 木府, if its current admission terms and opening arrangements suit you. Check those before committing; we have not quoted an unverified ticket price. Alternatively, stay with the exterior streets and the historical context above.
- Take a proper lunch break: sit down, confirm portions and prices, and decide whether the group has energy for another walk.
- Finish with a shorter water-and-lanes loop: give yourself time to notice the relationship between bridges, doorways and channels. Return to the hotel before deciding on an evening outing.
If the goal is a relaxed first day, do not automatically add a hillside viewpoint. Decide after seeing the actual route and how everyone feels. With children or limited walking tolerance, keep the return route short and treat the indoor stop as optional.
Read the water and buildings without intruding
UNESCO describes a system in which water from Black Dragon Pool feeds town channels, with streets and buildings arranged around them. Use that observation to slow down: where does a small bridge connect a doorway to the lane, and how does the route respond to the slope? These are details you can appreciate without entering a private courtyard.
A picturesque doorway may belong to a home or business, not a public attraction. Ask before stepping inside or making a person the subject of a close photograph. Keep access clear and do not use the channels for washing belongings. The archival photographs in this guide illustrate the setting; businesses, decorations and visitor arrangements may have changed.
Food, shopping and an evening you can control
For lunch, favour a place where you can read the displayed menu and clarify what each price buys. Ask whether a dish is an individual serving or shared portion before ordering several. When buying souvenirs or booking an activity, settle the total price and inclusions before payment. An appealing shopfront is not proof of a product's age, handmade origin or cultural authenticity. For an evening drink or performance, check any minimum spend, ticket requirement and finishing time, then save the way back to your room. You do not need to book nightlife to enjoy an evening walk.
Before you leave your room
- Save the accommodation address and agreed road pickup pin in Chinese.
- Carry the identification needed for your booked venues and any fee receipt.
- Check the weather and choose shoes suitable for the actual paving; this is not a guaranteed step-free route.
- Agree a meeting point if the group separates.
- Keep enough phone power for the return journey, with an offline address backup.
