Dali Old Town: A First-Visit Walk, Airport Arrival and Food Guide

Give the town a full, unhurried day if you want a museum, street food and time to explore beyond the busiest shopping street. The timings below are suggested time allocations, not measured walking times or guaranteed opening hours.

Is Dali Old Town the right base for you?

Choose the old town if you want to step outside for a walk, return to your room between outings and spend an evening without arranging another long transfer. Choose accommodation by its exact map pin rather than the word “Dali”: a room near Dali railway station is not a room in the old town. An attractive hotel photograph also tells you little about how far you will carry a suitcase.

For a first stay, shortlist accommodation near a vehicle-accessible edge, then ask the property to identify the actual drop-off point and the route to reception. Arrival: distinguish the station, airport and old town

The most useful verified airport connection is the Fenghua Xueyue Hotel city air terminal, 风花雪月酒店机场城市候机楼, on the old town's eastern side. The airport's notice, republished by the local tourism channel in June 2026, gives the following arrangements. Check at the counter before travelling: road conditions and operational changes can affect the trip.

Orient yourself before following a walking route

Fuxing Road, 复兴路, is the useful spine through the old town's street grid. Save separate pins for the South Gate, Wuhua Tower, Dali City Museum, Renmin Road and your hotel. Use the North Gate, 北门, as an optional extension rather than assuming every gate is close to your booked pickup.

The local government's old-town introduction identifies the museum in the former Du Wenxiu headquarters, Wuhua Tower, the Confucian Temple and Jiang Gong Ci as cultural stops. Pick one indoor stop to anchor the day; trying to enter every building can turn a pleasant walk into a timetable exercise.

A flexible first-day walk

1. Start at the South Gate and follow Fuxing Road. Set aside about 45 minutes for orientation and the first streets. Photograph the meeting point before leaving it, especially if your group will split up.
2. Make Dali City Museum your optional deeper stop. Allow about an hour if it is open and the exhibitions interest you. Check the day's entrance arrangements on arrival; this itinerary does not depend on a guaranteed admission slot.
3. Pause at Wuhua Tower. Its exterior is a clear landmark for reconnecting with Fuxing Road. Treat access upstairs as optional and check the posted terms, rather than assuming a viewpoint is always open or included.
4. Choose Renmin Road for a food-and-shop break. Budget about an hour for lunch rather than eating while continuously walking. Save any shop you want to revisit as a map pin, not just a photograph of a generic storefront.
5. Use the afternoon for one side excursion. Choose the Confucian Temple area or Jiang Gong Ci if accessible, then return towards your accommodation. If you prefer a longer street walk, continue towards the North Gate instead.

These are editorial suggestions, not an official tour or an assertion that every venue is open. A closed museum need not ruin the day: shorten that stop and keep the street walk. Do not add an Erhai circuit or a mountain excursion simply because a map makes them look nearby; each needs separate transport planning.

What to look for when ordering food

Rushan / 乳扇 is a useful first food to recognise. Dali's official cultural account describes it as a milk product stretched into sheets and dried. It is not a dairy-free crisp. Order a small portion first, ask which toppings will be added and explain any ingredient restrictions before preparation. Read the local introduction to rushan making for its Bai cultural context.

The archival food photograph illustrates the product category, not a recommendation for that particular stall or evidence that it still operates. Choose a current menu with displayed prices, confirm whether an item is priced per piece or portion, and ask before adding drinks or extras. Make the day work for your group

• With children: choose one cultural stop, a seated meal and a clear return point. Keep an afternoon extension optional.
• With limited walking tolerance: ask the hotel about the actual surface and steps between the car and room. A “central” address is not a step-free-access guarantee.
• With luggage: agree storage and collection with your accommodation before starting the walk; do not build the route around an assumed public locker.
• In rain: shorten the outdoor circuit and check a museum's access before heading there. Take footwear suitable for wet paving, and avoid scheduling a non-refundable activity immediately after a long walk.
• For a quiet photograph: try a morning street walk, but expect some businesses to open later. This is a timing preference, not a promise of empty streets.

Budget and departure checklist

Keep the verified airport-bus amount separate from variable spending. Add your room, meals, any individually ticketed venue, and a contingency for a different transfer if your timing changes.
