You do not need to add a North American-style percentage to every restaurant bill in Shanghai. The city's official visitor guidance says tipping is not expected in most restaurants and hotels. A service charge printed on a menu or bill is a different question: establish the total before deciding whether to leave anything voluntarily.

This guide covers restaurant and hotel dining bills in Shanghai. It does not prescribe gratuities for private tours or other services with their own booking terms.

Make the decision from the bill

What you see What to do
A total with no service charge Pay the stated total. Do not automatically calculate an extra percentage.
A separately stated service charge Check its rate and what it applies to. Treat it as part of the quoted bill, separately from any voluntary tip.
An unfamiliar extra line Ask staff to identify it before paying. Its presence alone does not tell you that it is a gratuity.
You want to thank a staff member First settle the bill. Ask whether a voluntary tip can be accepted; a clear verbal thank-you is also appropriate.

The Shanghai government's dining FAQ notes that service charges of 10–15% may appear in hotel dining venues and some other restaurants or bars. This is a possible charge, not a citywide tip rate or a promise about a particular venue. Read that venue's menu.

Ask about the total before you order

Look for a note beside prices or at the bottom of the menu. If a set meal, buffet or package looks attractive, ask whether the displayed figure is the final payable amount and whether drinks or other ordered items have a different charging basis. Do this before committing to the order, when you can still compare options.

For example, a fictional RMB 400 meal with a clearly stated 10% service charge would total RMB 440 if that charge applies to the whole meal. The extra RMB 40 is the service charge; it does not create a second automatic tip. This is arithmetic to help read a bill, not a Shanghai restaurant price quotation.

When several people share dishes, nominate one person to check the order and the final total. Our guide to ordering shared meals covers the separate problem of choosing and coordinating the food.

Useful words to show staff

Chinese Meaning or question
小费 Tip or gratuity
服务费 Service charge
总计 Total
请问,这个价格包含服务费吗? Does this price include the service charge?
请问,这笔费用是什么? What is this charge?
请给我看一下明细。 Please show me the itemised breakdown.

Point to the actual line rather than relying on a translated label in isolation. Check the amount on the payment screen against the explained bill. If you are paying for the group, save the breakdown as well as the payment confirmation; the latter may show only the amount transferred.

Keep voluntary thanks separate from an unexplained demand

The Shanghai culture and tourism bureau's Chinese-language explanation distinguishes a voluntary tip from a listed service charge. If a request is unclear, ask whether it is optional and ask a manager to explain the bill. Avoid turning a language misunderstanding into a negotiation over an assumed percentage.

Do not assume that adding money to a payment automatically directs it to a particular employee. Ask first if that is your intention. Equally, do not withdraw cash solely because you believe every Shanghai meal requires a tip. If you need cash for other expenses, plan that separately with our foreign-card ATM guide.

Before leaving the restaurant

Confirm the total, check that the payment succeeded and retain the record you need. A payment confirmation, itemised bill and formal invoice serve different purposes; see our receipts and fapiao guide if you need documentation for expenses. The practical habit is to understand one complete bill before adding any optional amount.
