China Train Boarding Cutoffs: When to Arrive and How to Find Your Gate
Last checked: 25 October 2026.
A train's departure time is not your deadline for reaching the station entrance. In China, boarding gates close before departure, and the interval is set by the station. Plan to be waiting at the correct gate before boarding begins, with your passport accessible, rather than treating the last few minutes as usable arrival time.
Which deadline matters?
Article 22 of the railway passenger regulations says stations stop checking tickets before departure and must announce their cutoff locally. There is no single nationwide number in that rule. A five-minute assumption taken from another station is not a reliable plan for yours.
| Stage | What it means for your plan |
|---|---|
| Arrival at the building | You still need to complete the entrance procedures and find the waiting area. |
| Boarding gate opens | Check the train number and follow the queue for your service. |
| Boarding gate closes | The station's announced cutoff applies even though departure is later. |
| Train departs | This is the train's scheduled movement, not permission to enter until that moment. |
The distinction matters most on a first visit, with children or with luggage that slows your movement. For the wider booking and document process, use our foreign-passport high-speed rail guide.
Build an arrival plan backwards
As an editorial planning allowance, aim to reach an unfamiliar mainline station about an hour before departure. This is not a railway minimum or a guarantee: increase the allowance if you need ticket assistance, have a large group, face holiday traffic or require an accessible route. A familiar small station may need less, but only make that decision after checking its arrangements.
- Copy the exact departure station name from the booking, including any North, South, East or West suffix.
- Check the route to its departure entrance, not simply to a similarly named metro stop or station district.
- Add time for the approach from the drop-off point and for entrance queues.
- Keep a separate margin for finding the gate after entering. Do not spend this margin shopping before locating it.
12306's station-entry guidance specifically warns that ticket offices, entrances, gates and platforms are separated by walking distances, and that security and identity-check queues can take time. A map's driving estimate therefore cannot tell you when you will be ready to board.
Read the screen by train number
The official 12306 gate-information guidance directs passengers to find their train number on the station display. Match the complete number, not just the destination: several departures can serve the same city. Recheck the screen if you move away from the gate, and follow current announcements if a gate changes.
| Chinese sign | Meaning | Useful response |
|---|---|---|
| 候车 | Waiting | Locate the assigned gate and stay alert. |
| 检票口 | Ticket-checking / boarding gate | Match its identifier to your train. |
| 正在检票 | Boarding checks in progress | Join the correct queue with your document ready. |
| 停止检票 | Boarding checks stopped | Ask staff about your ticket options. |
Keep documents and the group together
The official passenger instructions require the valid identity document used for the booking during checks. Keep the original passport in a reachable pocket rather than buried in a suitcase. If a reader does not accept it, ask the staffed lane for help promptly.
Agree who carries each child's document and who manages the bags before joining the queue. If someone needs extra assistance, arrange it beforehand using our 12306 special-assistance planning guide. Do not build the itinerary around running between checkpoints.
If you reach a closed gate
Show staff the booking and ask what can be done next. Do not assume that seeing the train, or seeing a delayed departure on a screen, means the gate will reopen. Our missed-departure and ticket-change guide explains the next decision. Check the actual ticket status before buying a replacement, and allow a fresh station margin for any new service.
