Last checked: 4 October 2026. This guide covers voluntary refunds for ordinary mainland China train tickets. Hong Kong cross-border services and special ticket products have separate conditions. The amount shown by 12306 for your actual booking takes priority over a worked example.

A wrong date is easiest to fix immediately after payment. A change of itinerary several days later is a different problem: the refund charge depends on the time remaining before your train, not how long you have owned the ticket. Before pressing Cancel, work out whether you want to abandon the journey, correct an accidental purchase or move to another train.

Choose the right action before cancelling

Your situation First action What to avoid
You paid moments ago for the wrong date or train Check the mistaken-purchase grace conditions below immediately Spending the 30-minute window comparing hotels
You still want the same journey at another time Check replacement availability and the change quotation Cancelling your only seat before confirming an alternative
You no longer want to travel Read the refund quote for each affected passenger Assuming a return or connecting ticket disappears automatically
The railway cancelled or delayed your train Check the disruption rules and ask railway staff if needed Treating a railway disruption as an ordinary voluntary cancellation

If you are still choosing the original train, use our foreign-passport booking and boarding guide first. This article deals with what happens after a ticket has been issued.

The 2026 mistaken-purchase grace period

China Railway introduced this service on 19 January for travel from 2 February 2026. For an eligible electronic- or points-paid purchase through 12306, you can request a free online refund within 30 minutes of successful payment, provided departure is still at least four hours away. It is limited to one order per purchaser per calendar day. Changed tickets, reservation purchases and waitlist purchases are excluded. A refund that is already free under ordinary rules does not use this allowance. See the China Railway announcement reproduced by Qiyi.

Check both clocks. Paying at 10:00 for a 13:30 train does not qualify merely because you notice the mistake at 10:05. Paying at 10:00 for an 18:00 train and acting at 10:10 may qualify, but only if the other conditions are satisfied. Do not wait until the final seconds: opening an order is not the same as completing a refund.

Ordinary mainland refund fees

The 12306 refund FAQ gives the following bands, measured before departure from the boarding station on your ticket.

Time remaining Ordinary charge Example on a CNY 400 ticket
At least 8 days No refund fee CNY 400 returned
At least 48 hours, but less than 8 days 5% CNY 380 returned
At least 24 hours, but less than 48 hours 10% CNY 360 returned
Less than 24 hours, before departure 20% CNY 320 returned

These are simple calculations, not quotations for your booking. Fees have rounding rules and a CNY 2 minimum when a fee applies. Moving a ticket from inside the eight-day window to a later train and then cancelling it is not a free-refund loophole: the specified case still attracts 5%.

Put a reminder comfortably before the relevant boundary rather than at it. A small decision delay can change the cost even though your travel date has not changed. Use China time when reading the departure; our China time-zone and midnight booking guide explains why a late-night departure can belong to a different date than you expect.

Compare changing with refunding and buying again

A change is not automatically free, and “free change” does not mean the new fare equals the old fare. 12306 separates the ticket-price difference from any change charge. Its current ticket-change conditions distinguish changing at least 48 hours ahead, changing close to departure, and changing after departure. Moving to a later date near departure can incur a charge even where an earlier or same-day change does not.

Compare the two final quotations before committing. Write down: the refund loss on the old ticket, the fare for the replacement, and the change transaction's total. Do not compare only the advertised fare on the search-results screen. If the replacement sells out while you are deciding, the cheaper theoretical option is no longer available.

Keep enough available payment capacity for the transaction. Depending on the payment and fare difference, a change may involve a new payment followed by a separate refund rather than a small net payment. The railway explains these cases in its change-of-ticket guidance. Do not assume the old money will be spendable immediately.

A careful cancellation workflow for a foreign visitor

  1. Open the issued order, not a saved search or an unpaid request. Match the passenger, passport, train, boarding station and departure date.
  2. Identify the passenger tickets you actually want to refund. For a family booking, read every selected name before proceeding.
  3. Read the fee and refund amount. If the grace period should apply but the screen shows a fee, stop and verify eligibility rather than assuming the fee will be removed later.
  4. Confirm the operation, then reopen the order. Save the resulting status and reference privately.
  5. Check the original payment channel later. Keep the cancellation confirmation until the money arrives; a successful request and a settled refund are different milestones.

At a station, bring the original identity document used for the booking. If somebody acts for you, the FAQ requires both the passenger's booking document and the representative's document. Refunds return through the original payment method. For a ticket bought through an agency, start with that booking channel and ask separately about any agency service fee; the railway's percentage table is not a promise about every intermediary charge.

If you have checked in, missed the train or face a disruption

The railway passenger conditions say to tell station staff before departure if you have already passed ticket inspection and want to cancel the journey. Ordinary refunds are not available after the train departs; a post-departure change has its own restrictions and is not a way to create a refundable ticket. Ask promptly rather than leaving the station and hoping an unused ticket refunds itself.

Railway-caused cancellation or delay can invoke separate no-fee provisions. Keep the disruption notice and ask about connected tickets before cancelling them independently. Our train-connection planning guide helps you identify which onward reservation is at risk.

What to save before closing the app

Keep the order reference, passenger selection, original payment record, quoted fee and final cancellation status. Do not send an unredacted passport or a full payment screenshot to a stranger offering to “recover” the refund. For unresolved railway booking issues, use the help channel inside your genuine 12306 account or a staffed railway counter. Most avoidable losses begin with a rushed choice, a misunderstood date or an assumption that a cancelled itinerary is the same thing as cancelled tickets.
