China Domestic Flight Baggage: Cabin Sizes, Checked Allowances and Fare Traps
Last checked: 29 September 2026. This guide covers ordinary passenger baggage on mainland China domestic flights. Your operating airline, fare product and ticket conditions control the allowance; international connections, special items and membership benefits need their own check.
A suitcase that arrived in China without an extra charge can still cost money on your next flight. The useful question is not “What is China's baggage allowance?” but “What does this particular domestic ticket include?” Check cabin size, cabin weight and checked allowance separately before choosing the cheapest fare.
The three checks to make before paying
- Identify the operator. Read the “operated by” field, not only the flight number or the booking website's logo.
- Open the fare's baggage details. Record cabin pieces, kilograms and dimensions; then checked kilograms or pieces. “No checked baggage” does not mean no cabin bag, and purchased checked weight does not enlarge your cabin allowance.
- Compare the total you will actually use. Add the checked-bag purchase to the basic fare and compare that with the baggage-inclusive product. Keep the price comparison in the same currency and for the same flight.
If you are still choosing airports or booking with a passport, start with our China domestic-flight booking guide. Here the focus is avoiding a baggage mismatch after the ticket is bought.
Two airlines that show why one rule does not work
| Ticket example | Included cabin baggage | Checked baggage |
|---|---|---|
| Air China ordinary domestic economy | One piece, up to 5 kg, 55 × 40 × 20 cm | Standard domestic economy allowance: 20 kg; confirm your ticket |
| Spring 9C 超惠飞, or 优选飞 without a baggage package | One piece, up to 7 kg, 20 × 30 × 40 cm | No included checked allowance |
| Spring 9C 优选飞 with baggage package | One piece, up to 7 kg, 20 × 30 × 40 cm | 20 kg |
| Spring 9C 尊享飞, issued from 29 March 2026 | One piece, up to 10 kg, 20 × 40 × 55 cm | 20 kg |
Sources: Air China cabin baggage, Air China baggage FAQ, and Spring's current baggage table. These examples are not a table for every Chinese airline. Spring's published cabin dimensions exclude wheels, telescopic handles and carrying handles; do not transfer that measurement convention to another carrier.
Air China also permits one qualifying small personal item that fits under the seat in front. Do not assume that a separate laptop bag is automatically additional to Spring's one-piece rule. If you need two bags in the cabin, resolve that against the airline's exact product before departure.
A “20-inch cabin case” is not a guarantee
The retail label describes a product category, not permission to board. Measure the packed bag in centimetres and check all three dimensions against your carrier's rule. A soft bag can bulge when full; a hard case cannot become narrower because it weighs less. Fold the handle down, inspect projecting parts and use the airline's own measurement definition.
For example, a case measuring 55 × 40 × 20 cm and weighing 6 kg is too heavy for the ordinary Air China economy cabin example above. It also exceeds the small cabin dimensions on Spring's basic product, even though 6 kg is below that product's 7 kg weight limit. Passing one test does not cancel the other.
We recommend weighing the bag after adding chargers, documents and the jacket you may put away at the airport. Leave a little margin rather than packing to a household scale's final decimal place. That margin is a planning choice, not an extra allowance granted by the airline.
Spring's 2026 ticket-date trap
Spring changed 尊享飞 checked baggage to 20 kg for tickets issued from 00:00 on 29 March 2026. Earlier-issued tickets retain the corresponding rules at issuance. The distinction is the ticket's issue date, not simply the day you fly. This is stated in the airline's 26 March adjustment notice.
If an older confirmation and today's website disagree, keep the original confirmation and ask the airline to identify the applicable ticket rule. Do not discard evidence of the product you purchased. Equally, do not use an older blog's larger allowance to pack for a newly issued ticket. Spring Airlines 9C and Spring Japan IJ are not interchangeable rule sets.
Buy checked weight before reaching the gate
Once your packing is settled, open the booking in the airline's official channel and check available baggage add-ons. Verify the passenger, date, direction and flight segment before paying; a return journey should not be treated as one undifferentiated baggage purchase. Save the receipt alongside the itinerary, then check that the order shows the entitlement.
Spring's baggage questions and handling guide makes an important distinction: checked allowance is used at check-in, while an oversized cabin bag found at the boarding gate is handled under separate rules. Buying checked kilograms is not permission to carry those kilograms through to the cabin. Resolve an unsuitable cabin case at the counter.
Do not plan around a generic excess-baggage price copied from another route. Get the quote for your actual booking and compare the final amount before confirming. If you cannot add baggage online, contact the operator while there is still time to change your packing or arrive earlier for counter handling.
Separate tickets: check every leg
Make a short list with one row per flight: airline, fare, cabin allowance, checked allowance and proof of purchase. An international ticket and a separately purchased domestic flight can have very different conditions. Do not assume the first airline's allowance, baggage tag or through-check arrangement extends to the second booking; obtain confirmation for the precise itinerary.
If rail is another part of the journey, compare the China train-luggage limits before buying a large case. A bag that suits one transport mode may be awkward or non-compliant on another.
Keep baggage allowance and security rules separate
A weight allowance says nothing about whether a particular object is permitted. Before handing over a case, separately check batteries and other restricted items; our China power-bank and electrical-packing guide is a starting point, followed by the current airline and airport notice for your departure.
- Photograph the packed case and keep its identifying details.
- Have the baggage entitlement and booking reference accessible without relying on airport Wi-Fi.
- Check the baggage tag's destination before leaving the counter.
- Keep the baggage receipt until you have collected the correct case.
- After a change or reissue, reopen the order and recheck any purchased baggage rather than assuming it carried over.
The best packing plan is one that already matches the ticket when you leave the hotel. It should not depend on an agent overlooking a kilogram, a second bag or an oversized case.
