Shopping Returns in China: In-Store Policies, Online Orders and Departure Checks
Buying a souvenir in a shop and ordering something online are not the same return-policy decision. Before paying, establish whether a change of mind allows a refund, an exchange, or neither. A defective item raises a different question from a purchase you simply no longer want.

Start with the purchase channel
| Situation | What to establish | Practical next step |
|---|---|---|
| Changed your mind after buying in a physical shop | Whether that retailer promised a return or exchange | Keep a written copy of the promise before paying. |
| Changed your mind about an online goods order | Whether the seven-day rule applies and whether an exception was properly disclosed | Open the order's return process promptly; do not wait until departure. |
| Item is faulty or does not meet quality requirements | The defect and the applicable remedy, rather than a discretionary change-of-mind policy | Document the problem and request a specific solution. |
The Beijing market regulator's May 2026 explanation distinguishes remote goods purchases from ordinary shop purchases: the statutory seven-day no-reason return rule is not a blanket entitlement for everything bought in person. A store may offer a more generous voluntary policy. Do not infer that policy from a sale sign, a familiar brand name or the fact that you paid by card.
Four questions to ask before paying
- Refund or exchange? “可以退货还是只能换货?” asks whether you can return the item or only exchange it.
- What is the deadline? “最晚哪天?” Ask for the actual final date, not just “within a few days.”
- What must I retain? “需要保留什么?” Clarify packaging, tags, accessories and purchase records.
- Where and how? Ask whether you must revisit this branch, whether another branch can help, and how the money would be returned.
For a purchase near the end of your trip, treat an unclear answer as a reason to postpone buying. Photograph the relevant policy with permission, or ask staff to record it on your receipt. Keep the product description and order reference together with your purchase receipts and fapiao records; a bank transaction alone may not identify the exact item or promised terms.
Online orders: a deadline is not permission to use the item
Under the national online no-reason return regulation, the seven-day notification period runs from the day after receipt. Exceptions include categories such as custom-made and perishable goods; other exclusions depend on the nature of the product and the required disclosures. Check the actual order rather than assuming every online purchase qualifies.
Reasonable inspection is different from using a product extensively. Preserve the item, accessories and gifts. After notifying the seller, obtain the correct return address, send the goods promptly and retain tracking evidence. Return shipping is normally the consumer's responsibility unless otherwise agreed. The regulation provides for refund within seven days of the seller receiving qualifying intact goods; that is not a promise that your bank balance changes the moment you press “return.”
If delivery went to your hotel, settle who will pack, dispatch and track any return before checkout. Our domestic parcel and hotel shipping guide helps with that separate logistics task. Do not assume reception can manage a dispute after you leave.
If there is a fault
The Consumer Rights Protection Law treats quality problems separately from no-reason returns. Depending on the circumstances, the remedy may involve return, replacement or repair; a fault does not make every requested remedy automatic.
Stop using the item if doing so would obscure the problem. Save clear photographs, the order page, payment record and a short dated explanation. Contact the seller first, then use the platform's dispute channel where applicable. If negotiation fails, the regulator points consumers toward official 12315 complaint channels. For a high-value dispute or an unclear legal position, seek qualified assistance rather than relying on a travel article.
Before leaving China
Check that you have the seller's reply, shipment receipt and refund reference—not just a verbal assurance. Keep access to the payment account used for the purchase. Finally, a departure shopping tax refund is a different process: it does not reverse the sale or substitute for a merchant return.
