A room that sleeps three people does not necessarily include three breakfasts. Nor does a photograph of a large buffet tell you whether breakfast is part of your rate. For a first trip to China, the useful question is not simply “Does this hotel serve breakfast?” It is “Which people, on which mornings, can eat under this particular booking?”

Last checked: 27 September 2026. The hotel examples below illustrate different policies, not recommendations or rules for every property in a chain. Confirm the terms for your travel dates before paying.

Read the meal allowance separately from the room occupancy

Chinese booking descriptions often shorten breakfast information to a few characters. Use this reading aid, then open the full rate conditions. A family room, twin bed layout or free child stay is not a substitute for a meal allowance.

Wording Plain-English meaning What to confirm
无早 / 不含早餐 No breakfast included The separate price, if you want to buy it
单早 / 含1份早餐 One breakfast allowance Whether that means one registered guest on each morning of the stay
双早 / 含2份早餐 Two breakfast allowances Whether children are included separately or count toward the two
每日早餐 Daily breakfast How many diners and which dates
自助早餐 Buffet breakfast This describes the format, not whether it is free

Enter every guest and each child's age in the search before comparing prices. Save the final confirmation showing the selected room, dates, guest count and meal plan. If a hotel description advertises breakfast but your selected rate says no meals, clarify that discrepancy before booking. Our foreign-passport hotel check-in guide covers the separate arrival arrangements; meal entitlements should be checked alongside them, not inferred from them.

Children: age and height rules are not interchangeable

Two official examples show why there is no useful nationwide shortcut:

  • Novotel Hangzhou Binjiang's breakfast information says children aged 12 and under eat free, limited to two free child breakfasts per room. It lists RMB 78 per person for children over 12. Confirm how the child policy applies to your chosen adult rate.
  • Banyan Tree Dongguan Songshan Lake's family offer has a minimum two-night stay and includes daily breakfast for up to two adults and two children under 1.2 metres. That height condition belongs to this specific package; it is not a promise for every room sold by the hotel.

For a tall younger child, a height-based rule can produce a different outcome from an age-based one. Ask using both measurements: “One child, age eight, height 135 cm.” If your child is exactly at a boundary, ask whether the boundary is included. Do not interpret “under” as “up to and including.”

Also ask whether a free child allowance requires an adult to purchase breakfast and whether it is capped per room. A second room, a third child or an extra adult can change the calculation. Request the total breakfast supplement for your actual party, not just the headline adult price.

Compare the total you will actually use

Compare like with like: the same room, dates, cancellation deadline and payment conditions. Then calculate:

Breakfast-plan premium + uncovered guests' meals = the real added cost of the breakfast plan.

For an explicitly hypothetical example, suppose a two-night room-only booking is RMB 1,200, while the otherwise identical breakfast rate is RMB 1,320 for two adults. The premium is RMB 120 across the stay. If both adults eat on both mornings, that is RMB 30 per consumed adult breakfast. If an early departure means you both miss the second morning, it becomes RMB 60 per consumed breakfast. Add any child supplement separately. These figures demonstrate the arithmetic; they are not a quotation from a Chinese hotel.

Do not automatically value unused meals at the walk-in buffet price. The Banyan Tree family offer linked above explicitly says unused package components are not discounted or refunded. Other bookings have their own terms. A rate with more included benefits can be worse value if your itinerary prevents you from using them.

Work backward from your departure, not the restaurant closing time

The official Novotel page lists breakfast from 06:30 to 10:00 daily. By contrast, Holiday Inn Express Guangzhou Panyu Dashi lists 07:00–10:00 on weekdays and 07:00–10:30 on weekends. A later weekend finish is useful for a lie-in; it does nothing for someone leaving at 06:45.

Write down the time you must leave the hotel, then subtract time to eat, collect bags and check out. Do this before choosing an included-breakfast rate for the final night. When linking cities, use our transfer-day planning guide to avoid treating a travel morning as a normal sightseeing morning.

If breakfast opens too late, ask the hotel in advance whether a breakfast box is available, whether it is included, what time it can be collected and when it must be ordered. Treat this as a request, not an entitlement. If the answer is no, arrange a separate meal you can access before departure. Do not silently assume a station restaurant will be open or that buffet food can be packed into your own containers.

A short message to send before arrival

Send the booking number through the hotel or booking platform's private messaging channel, then use these questions. You do not need to send a passport photograph just to ask about breakfast.

  • 我的订单每天包含几位成人和几位儿童的早餐?
How many adults and children have breakfast included each day?
  • 儿童早餐按年龄还是身高收费?孩子___岁,身高___厘米。
Is the child price based on age or height? My child is ___ years old and ___ cm tall.
  • 早餐在哪一层?几点开始?
Which floor serves breakfast, and when does it start?
  • 我们早上___点离店,可以提前准备早餐盒吗?需要另外付费吗?
We leave at ___ in the morning. Can you prepare a breakfast box? Is there an extra charge?

At check-in and at the restaurant

Before leaving reception, confirm the restaurant name, breakfast dates and the number of covered guests. Ask whether access is recorded by room number, a voucher or another method. If reception's answer differs from your confirmation, show the saved rate conditions and resolve the difference before the first meal.

At the restaurant entrance, check any extra charge before an additional guest sits down. A dining room's buffet photographs are not a current ingredient list. Ask staff about specific dietary requirements rather than judging a dish by appearance; request alternatives in advance if your needs are essential to the booking. For meals beyond the hotel, our restaurant ordering and shared-meal guide explains another common source of first-trip confusion.

The decision: buy the breakfast plan when the right people are covered, its hours fit your mornings and the real premium is worthwhile to you. Choose room-only when you will leave before service, prefer eating outside or cannot confirm the family's total cost. Neither option is inherently more authentic or better value.
