Guangzhou Baiyun Airport T2 or T3: Choose the Right Ground Transport
At Guangzhou Baiyun Airport, choose your terminal before choosing your ground transport. A route to “the airport” can leave out the most important part of the journey: getting to the building used by your flight. This guide compares T2's metro access with T3's Gaozeng shuttle connection and intercity-rail station, without treating them as the same service.
Last checked: 20 October 2026. Recheck the terminal against your airline's flight information on the travel date. This is not an airside connection guide or a guarantee of a minimum transfer time.
Start with the flight, not an old saved route
Terminal assignments have changed during 2026. For example, Hainan Airlines' announcements state that all its Guangzhou arrivals and departures moved to T3 from 7 May. That is a reason to check your particular flight, not a reason to assume every airline uses T3.
Write down the flight number, operating airline, date and terminal before booking a car or selecting a rail destination. For a domestic departure, also review our foreign-passport domestic-flight guide. Reaching the terminal is only one stage before boarding.
The station names that matter
| Terminal and approach | What to select | Decision point |
|---|---|---|
| T2 by metro | Airport North / 机场北 | Follow metro signage, not merely any sign mentioning a railway. |
| T3 using the Gaozeng connection | Gaozeng / 高增, then 空港2路支线 | This includes a bus transfer; allow for waiting and luggage handling. |
| T3 by intercity rail | Baiyun Airport East / 白云机场东, marked T3 | Check an actual intercity itinerary and its operating times. It is not the same as a direct metro journey. |
| Either terminal by car | Exact T2 or T3 departure/arrival location | Confirm the terminal with the driver and distinguish drop-off from pickup instructions. |
China Southern's T2 airport information places Airport North metro station on the west side of the Ground Transportation Centre at basement level. That page also contains older terminal-transfer material; do not use its historic T1 shuttle section as a current T3 plan.
T3 via Gaozeng: use the new bus interchange

The airport economic-zone authority's 1 October update confirms the Airport 2 branch shuttle connection, the free-fare measure introduced on 6 June, and a new Gaozeng bus interchange in use from 1 October. It describes a covered connection between the metro exit and the new bus area.
Follow current signs for 空港2路支线 rather than an old screenshot of a curbside pickup. Ask staff for the T3 bus if there is any doubt. On the airport-to-city journey, confirm that you are joining the Gaozeng connection, not a different airport bus product.
The same notice included extra late services specifically for selected National Day dates. Those dates have passed. We do not reproduce them as the ordinary October timetable or promise a particular wait. Check the current last connection before relying on this option after a late arrival.
T3 intercity rail: check the complete journey
The Huadu transport authority's intercity navigation update identifies Baiyun Airport East with T3 and Baiyun Airport North with T2. It points passengers to the Guangzhou Metro app and Guangdong Intercity's official journey assistant for platform information.
Use that distinction when comparing routes. Look at the departure station, interchange, service time and final airport station together. A search result mentioning “airport rail” is not enough. For an overseas passport, confirm the ticketing and station-entry method for the actual service before purchasing; this guide does not assume every local QR-code product is available to every visitor.
Our decision rule is to favour the itinerary with the fewest uncertain steps, not automatically the shortest estimated travel time. A clearly understood metro-and-shuttle journey may be preferable to an unfamiliar rail connection; an intercity service may be preferable when it genuinely suits your starting station and schedule.
Luggage, late arrivals and mobility needs
Compare effort as well as fare. Large bags, a sleeping child or a mobility limitation can make an extra vehicle change the decisive factor. Check your airline baggage allowance separately: a convenient airport transfer does not change the ticket's baggage conditions.
For a late arrival, work from the expected time you will leave the terminal after formalities and baggage collection, not the aircraft's landing time. If the last public-transport connection is uncertain, obtain current advice at the airport and compare a terminal-specific taxi or arranged transfer. Do not plan to improvise a walk between terminal buildings.
If step-free access or assistance is essential, confirm the full route, including the bus boarding stage, before committing. Covered does not mean every transfer is effortless or independently accessible.
Before leaving your hotel
- Reconfirm flight date and terminal.
- Check the current route and operating window.
- Save the terminal name and destination in Chinese.
- Keep enough flexibility for a missed connection; do not build the plan around the final possible service.
- Check payment and phone access before departure.
Our phone setup checklist is useful for keeping flight updates and navigation available. The photos show the two terminals as context, not pickup maps: the T3 garden is not a shortcut to a transport platform.
