Nanjing in 2 Days: Purple Mountain, City Wall and Qinhuai River

Nanjing rewards a two-day plan that separates Purple Mountain’s large historic landscape from the compact old-city sights around the Qinhuai River. Trying to combine both in one day creates unnecessary cross-city travel.

Day 1: Purple Mountain and Zhongshan Scenic Area
Begin early at the Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum area. The official scenic-area guide says the mausoleum requires online reservation and real-name entry; passports are accepted identity documents. Carry the same original passport used to reserve.
- Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum: allow time for the long stair approach; the burial chamber is not open to visitors.
- Ming Xiaoling: choose this for Ming history and the stone-spirit path rather than adding every paid site.
- One final stop: Linggu Scenic Area or Meiling Palace, depending on history and architecture interests.
The official area covers roughly 31 square kilometres. Use scenic transport or public buses between distant stops instead of treating it as one continuous walk. Current ticket products and operating hours should be checked on the official Zhongshan Scenic Area channel.
Day 2: museum, city wall and Qinhuai evening
Reserve the morning for one museum or memorial that matters to you; popular venues can require separate real-name booking. Then visit a surviving section of the Ming city wall or the Xuanwu Lake area. Finish around Laomendong and the Confucius Temple district, where streets are most atmospheric after daylight but also busiest.
Confucius Temple is both a district and a ticketed cultural complex: decide whether you want the temple interior, a river cruise or simply the public streets. Do not assume one ticket covers every activity.
Reservations that visitors miss
Nanjing removed blanket reservations for many rated attractions in 2024, but major sites—including the Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum, Nanjing Museum and several high-demand venues—remain exceptions. Food decisions
Try duck dishes, tangbao and neighbourhood snacks, but avoid ordering an entire meal from the first crowded tourist-street stall. Confirm fillings and prices, and balance snacks with a seated meal. Carry safe drinking water using our China water guide.

Spring brings blossom demand around Purple Mountain; autumn is comfortable but popular; summer is hot and humid. Rain makes stone stairs slippery.
