Kaiping Diaolou: A Practical Zili, Liyuan and Majianglong Route

For a first visit to Kaiping's diaolou, plan a bounded heritage route through Zili Village, Liyuan Garden and, if time permits, Majianglong. These are separate stops, not three courtyards inside one entrance. The key decision is whether to make an unhurried two-stop day or stay overnight and add the third. Do not build the trip around an assumed continuous sightseeing shuttle.

What makes this route different?

The diaolou are fortified multi-storey buildings associated with Kaiping's villages and overseas Chinese communities. UNESCO distinguishes communal refuge towers, fortified residences and watchtowers; its World Heritage entry explains the mixture of Chinese and Western design. Look beyond an unusual roof: the relationship between the tower, ordinary houses and agricultural land is part of the story.

Kaiping's official tourism directory identifies Zili, Majianglong and Liyuan as the three components of the cultural tourism area. Liyuan is a garden-and-villa visit; it is not simply another name for Zili's tower cluster. This guide uses that specific tourism-area route rather than trying to cover every scattered tower in the county.

One day or one night?

These are editorial pacing recommendations, not a shuttle timetable. Allow about two hours per main stop as a starting budget, more if you read exhibitions closely. Tickets and operating checks

A July 2026 notice from Jiangmen's tourism bureau lists Liyuan alone at RMB 100 and a two-day pass at RMB 180 including Zili and Majianglong, with Liyuan open 09:00–17:30. Treat those as the published reference for the named product, and confirm the selected date, included sites, final admission and any transport inclusions before payment. Do not apply Liyuan's hours automatically to the villages.

For an international booking, check which document type the seller accepts and what must be shown at entry. Keep your original passport and order details available. A pass is good value only if its actual validity and your transport plan let you use it. Ask whether the two days must be consecutive, whether each site permits one entry, and whether the ticket must be exchanged. Do not infer unlimited re-entry from the words “two-day.”

First stop: Zili Village

Zili (自力村) is the strongest starting point if your main interest is seeing towers within a rural setting. Jiangmen's tourism-route introduction identifies Mingshi Lou and Yunhuan Lou among its buildings and describes the surrounding ponds and fields. Use the site map to locate the buildings actually open that day.

Begin with an exterior view that includes several towers and their surroundings, then choose an open interior rather than climbing every staircase. Compare a plain lower wall with an elaborate upper level; notice windows, balconies and the transition from village lane to defended residence. A photograph taken from farmland is not permission to enter a planted field. Remain on visitor paths and ask before photographing residents at close range.

Leave room for pauses rather than allocating a token thirty minutes. If stairs are unsuitable, an exterior-and-village visit can still be worthwhile, but confirm the accessible route and ticket value before entry. Do not assume historic tower interiors have lifts.

Second stop: Liyuan Garden

Liyuan (立园) changes the scale from clustered towers to a planned garden. The municipal introduction describes a large garden, small garden and villa area, connected across canals and walls by bridges and passages. Rather than repeating the tower visit, concentrate on how domestic buildings, water and circulation fit together.

Choose a route through the garden toward the villa area, checking the map for Panli Lou (泮立楼) and Ming Lu (明庐). The July notice reports a new Hero fountain-pen exhibition in Ming Lu. If it is open during your visit, it adds a different layer to the architecture; do not base the entire day on a particular temporary activity or souvenir giveaway. Allow time to look at the garden itself as well as the exhibition.

For lunch, the tourism bureau highlights regional dishes including eel rice and goose dishes. Check a restaurant's displayed menu, portion size and ingredients before ordering; a dish name alone does not confirm suitability for an allergy or dietary restriction. Optional third stop: Majianglong

Majianglong (马降龙) offers a different setting: the official directory describes villages and towers among bamboo and mature trees near the Tanjiang River. Choose it for a slower village-and-landscape walk, not just to add another ticket scan. The shaded setting is still outdoors, so bring water and check the forecast.

On a two-day visit, give Majianglong its own sightseeing period. On a one-day visit, add it only when the onward transfer, last entry and return ride are confirmed. Decide your pickup location before leaving the car. The ability to summon a ride at one busy entrance does not guarantee an immediate vehicle at a different rural stop.

How to arrange the transfers

The published 2024 5A route connected Zili, Liyuan, Chikan and Majianglong. That announcement establishes the route's existence at the time, not a September 2026 departure frequency or guarantee of free service. Ask the visitor centre for the current timetable and last departure in each direction. If it cannot be confirmed, arrange a driver with named stops and an agreed return instead of relying on the old announcement.

Write the itinerary in Chinese for the driver: 自力村 → 立园 → 马降龙. Agree what the quote includes: waiting, parking, changes to the route and the final destination. A point-to-point ride is not the same as a vehicle waiting throughout the day. Keep the driver's contact and the pickup pin offline. Where to stay and what to leave out

Investigate accommodation around Tangkou if your priority is an early start near the heritage sites, or a city hotel if services and your onward transfer matter more. Leave unrelated attractions out of this day. Wear shoes suitable for village paths and stairs, keep a light rain layer accessible, and shorten the route in difficult weather. The purpose is to understand how people built, lived and connected with overseas communities—not to spend most of your visit travelling between photo stops.
