Gulangyu First Visit: Ferry Piers, Passport Booking and a One-Day Walking Plan
Last checked: 7 September 2026. For a first visit to Gulangyu, book the ferry before the day's attractions. Your mainland departure terminal, island arrival pier and return destination are three separate choices. Getting one wrong can consume more time than the island crossing itself.
Choose a day trip or one night
A full day suits travellers who want one main paid attraction, architecture and a relaxed waterfront walk. Staying overnight gives you time for quieter lanes outside the main day-trip flow, but adds baggage handling and another hotel check-in. Our suggested walking allowance is five to seven hours including breaks, not an official tour duration. Leave the large suitcase at your Xiamen hotel when practical.
Gulangyu is a neighbourhood as well as a visitor destination. Its historic houses, music institutions and residential lanes reward a slower pace. The city's official visitor-map guidance identifies routes from both main piers toward Sunlight Rock and Shuzhuang Garden.
Choose the ferry terminals carefully

The operator lists ordinary Dongdu tourist sailings from CNY 35, with other products costing more. Read the fare for the exact route and vessel selected; the resident concession is not a general tourist fare. Xiamen Ferry's visitor FAQ is the primary reference.
Booking with a foreign passport
The operator's online FAQ describes using a real-name Alipay account and entering the passport under the appropriate document type. Use the official 屿见厦门轮渡 Alipay channel or the operator's official WeChat service, and keep the original booking passport with you. Do not enter a substitute Chinese identity number to force a booking through.
Official instructions differ on whether particular passport bookings can pass a reader directly or require a printed boarding credential. Allow time for the staffed desk: show the original passport and order, and obtain the boarding credential if requested. A photo of the passport should not be your only document. The outbound journey is tied to the selected sailing. The operator's FAQ says the return ticket includes one return within 20 days, with the return vessel unspecified; confirm the terms on your order. A walk from Sanqiutian with one clear priority
Start with the waterfront orientation at Sanqiutian, then walk inland toward the historic streets rather than queuing immediately for a photograph. Choose one of these anchors before lunch:
- Sunlight Rock 日光岩: choose the viewpoint if the weather is clear and stairs fit your mobility and energy.
- Shuzhuang Garden 菽庄花园: choose the coastal garden and piano-museum setting if landscape and music interest you more.
After your chosen attraction, allow a proper seated break. Use Longtou Road 龙头路 for food or shopping if it appeals, then spend the remaining time on lanes and the waterfront heading toward your return pier. Add a second attraction only if queues and weather leave room. This is an editorial route suggestion, not a promise that every stop is included in one ticket.
Gardens, museums and buildings are separate decisions
A ferry ticket transports you to the island; do not assume it includes a garden, museum or viewpoint. Compare current individual and combined attraction products at the official attraction channel before buying. Avoid buying a bundle merely because it has the longest list.
The island's cultural offer is evolving: Fujian's August 2026 report describes museum uses in former consular and hospital buildings, as well as the piano museum in Shuzhuang Garden. Heat, steps and luggage
Plan an island day around walking. Pack water, a light rain layer and shoes that handle slopes and wet paving. A stroller or rolling suitcase may be awkward on stepped routes; ask accommodation staff about the precise path from your pier before booking a stay. For reduced mobility, plan a shorter waterfront visit and confirm accessible routes directly rather than assuming the viewpoint is accessible.
Check marine-weather and ferry notices before leaving the hotel. If disruption threatens an onward flight or train, prioritise getting back to the mainland. Do not make the final ferry connection the only buffer before an airport departure. See our transfer-day planning guide.
Food and overnight choices
