Slender West Lake, Yangzhou: Gates, a Focused Walk and Boat Decisions
Slender West Lake (瘦西湖, Shouxihu) is a landscape to walk through, not a single lake-view stop. The useful first decision is which section you want to see and where you will finish. A visitor who wants the pavilion-and-bridge scenery needs a different plan from someone collecting every garden corner or adding a boat ride.
Last checked: 25 September 2026. This guide focuses on one daytime visit to Slender West Lake in Yangzhou—not Hangzhou's West Lake. Suggested time budgets are our planning allowances, not measured walking times or official tour durations.
Who should choose this visit?
Choose it for waterside garden design, framed views and traditional architecture. It suits a half-day in which the landscape itself is the activity. It is less suitable as a hurried stop squeezed between two fixed reservations, especially if you expect a boat to replace most of the walking.
| Your priority | Suggested approach | What to leave optional |
|---|---|---|
| First visit and classic scenery | South Gate approach, Xu Garden, Small Gold Hill and Five Pavilion Bridge | More distant extensions if you are tired. |
| Architecture and photography | Fewer stops, longer pauses around framed views and bridge approaches | Trying to reproduce every social-media photo. |
| Traveling with children or slower walkers | A shorter out-and-back section with a clear turnaround point | A full northward traverse. |
| Boat experience | Check the actual operating route and landing first | A prepaid onward pickup at an unconfirmed exit. |
Choose a gate before ordering transport

The scenic area's official address is 28 Dahongqiao Road, Yangzhou. For the suggested first-visit approach, save 瘦西湖南门 (Slender West Lake South Gate), not just the attraction name. A map pin placed somewhere within the scenic area is not necessarily a usable vehicle entrance.
The operator's transport page distinguishes South, East, West and North gate approaches. Its older fares and bus information should not be treated as a live quote. Obtain the current journey from your actual arrival point and specify the gate to a taxi driver or ride-hailing app.
At the entrance, photograph the current visitor map and identify your possible exit before starting. If you leave at a different gate, change the pickup location too. Do not ask a driver to meet you at “the entrance” after walking across the park.
Tickets: separate admission from extras
A February 2026 Yangzhou municipal news report on the approved annual tariff gives a peak-season reference of RMB100 and off-season reference of RMB60. Treat these as budget references, not a date-specific offer: verify your chosen day, ticket category and any promotion with the operator before paying.
The scenic area's ticket notice explicitly separates admission from boats, sightseeing vehicles and guiding. For two adults at a RMB100 reference tariff, admission alone would be RMB200; food, transport and optional rides are additional. That arithmetic is not a package quote.
For a foreign passport, establish the accepted purchase and entry process before selecting a product. Do not enter a fabricated Chinese identity number to get through a form. Ask whether the ticket requires a passport, booking code or staffed check, and retain the original document used for the booking. Our foreign-passport attraction reservation guide explains how to handle an incompatible booking screen.
We have not verified one current all-season opening span or a universal passport concession rule. Check the operator's dated notice for opening, last admission and closing separately; enquiries are 0514-87357803. Do not substitute an old night-tour announcement for today's daytime conditions.
A focused route through the classic garden views

Use the following as a sequence of priorities, adjusting to the current map and open paths. It is not a promise that every path is open or step-free.
- South Gate and Xu Garden (徐园): begin with a slower look at the buildings rather than heading straight for the most photographed bridge.
- Small Gold Hill (小金山): move onward for a broader view of the water and garden composition.
- Fishing Platform (钓鱼台): look at how openings frame other features rather than treating the pavilion as an isolated object.
- Five Pavilion Bridge (五亭桥): pause on the approach as well as at the bridge; different positions reveal how it sits within the water landscape.
- Twenty-Four Bridge area (二十四桥): make this an extension if you have enough energy and time, then choose your exit from the current map.
The Jiangsu government's landscape description explains the relationship between Xu Garden and Small Gold Hill and the framed views at Fishing Platform, including Five Pavilion Bridge and the White Pagoda. Those enduring design details are useful; the page's old prices, transport and event dates are not used here.
How much time to reserve
For planning, protect roughly three to four hours for a focused visit with pauses, rather than claiming that everyone can “finish” the park in two hours. This is an editorial allowance, not an official route duration. Photography, children, queues and a boat can lengthen it substantially.
If you have only 90 minutes, pick a limited section and accept that you will not see every landmark. Set a turnaround time before you start. A shorter visit with enough time to sit and look is more useful than arriving at the far end anxious about your next train.
Should you add a boat?
Ask four questions at the operating dock: where does this boat finish, is the fare per person or per boat, is it one-way or a return, and when is the last usable departure? Confirm whether everyone can board comfortably before purchasing. Different products should not be assumed to share a route or price.
Keep the walking plan viable without the boat. Weather or operations can change, and a photograph of boats from a previous year does not confirm today's service. If rain is forecast, check our China weather-warning planning guide and the scenic area's own notices before traveling.
Season, crowds and the final practical checks
Choose a daytime slot with enough remaining opening time for your selected section. For flower-focused travel, check a current bloom report rather than booking from an undated spring photograph. For a hot or wet forecast, shorten the route, bring drinking water and leave a rest margin. Bridge approaches and stone surfaces deserve extra care when wet.
Keep photography stops clear of narrow passageways, supervise children near water and do not climb barriers for a view. Step-free access through every garden section has not been established here; contact the scenic area about your required route if mobility is a deciding factor.
Before departure, save the gate name, dated ticket, identification requirements and exit plan. If visiting during the October holiday, use our Golden Week planning guide to protect enough time around this visit instead of adding more stops.
