Maijishan Grottoes: Choose the Right Ticket and Plan for the Cliff Walkways

Last checked: 19 October 2026. Maijishan Grottoes (麦积山石窟), near Tianshui in Gansu, combines sculptural detail with an unusually vertical visitor experience. The first decision is not which photograph to copy: it is whether you want—and can comfortably manage—the cliff-side cave route. Then buy the correct admission and plan the journey to the visitor centre.

Current cave notice: the Maijishan Grottoes operator announces that Cave 135 is closed for conservation from 16 October 2026, with reopening to be announced. Do not purchase a visit on the assumption that this particular cave will be included. Individual cave closures are different from closure of the whole scenic area.

Decide what kind of visit you want

The Dunhuang Academy's account of Maijishan describes a cliff with 221 caves and a sculpture tradition primarily using clay. The point of coming is therefore not simply a panoramic mountain view: it is the relationship between the cliff architecture and the human scale of the figures. A visitor interested in sculpture can make this the main event of a Tianshui stay.

Your priority Planning choice
See the cave area Choose admission explicitly including 石窟, not just the surrounding scenic area.
A particular special cave Check current availability and the separate guided-access arrangement before committing.
A landscape visit without the elevated route Ask what the non-cave ticket includes and which ground-level areas are accessible.
Step-free access throughout Do not assume the grotto route qualifies; obtain a precise access answer from the operator first.

Our editorial suggestion is to keep a half-day block for the attraction itself, with transfers additional, rather than squeezing it between two closely spaced trains. This is a planning allowance, not a promised queue length or a measured walking duration. If the elevated route does not suit you, decide that before paying for it.

Admission, shuttles and special caves are different purchases

The Dunhuang Academy visitor page lists adult A admission at RMB 80 and B admission at RMB 25. The scenic-area FAQ distinguishes cave-inclusive A admission from B admission excluding the caves. Confirm the wording and price in the current official booking screen; a cheaper scenic-area ticket is not a substitute if seeing the caves is your purpose.

The management committee's 15 July 2026 visitor notice states that admission and sightseeing transport are sold independently. Special-cave tickets are purchased separately at the interpretation-service centre below the grotto plaza. Compare the actual components rather than a package headline. This guide does not quote a current special-cave or shuttle price because those have not been sufficiently verified for this check.

The same notice specifies real-name, timed entry through the official WeChat accounts 麦积山旅游 or 麦积山石窟, with an on-site sales window at 峡门游客服务中心. It also warns against unauthorized ticket agents. If your passport cannot be entered online, ask the operator how to reserve and validate it; bring the original. Our passport-reservation guide helps prepare that enquiry without substituting another person's identity.

Arrival: plan around the visitor centre

Use 峡门游客服务中心 as the Chinese name when discussing the visitor-centre arrival with a driver. It is not Xiamen city in Fujian. The committee recommends this parking-and-shuttle approach because parking near the core attraction is limited. Confirm the pickup point for the return journey before leaving your vehicle or driver.

Rail searches should distinguish Tianshui South (天水南站) from Tianshui station (天水站). Read the actual station on your booking and arrange the onward road journey from there. We have not confirmed a current direct public-bus timetable or fare for this visit, so do not use an old numbered-bus itinerary as a guaranteed connection. Ask your accommodation or the operator to confirm current options, or arrange a quoted road transfer with the endpoint and return terms in writing.

For a rail-led trip, compare accommodation around your arrival/departure station with staying near the scenic area. The former simplifies your train-day logistics; the latter only helps if the property's actual entrance access and pickup arrangements suit your ticket. These are selection criteria, not endorsements of unverified hotels. See our China rail guide for overseas passport holders before locking in the intercity portion.

On the cliff: prepare before joining the route

The Academy's visitor rules describe narrow walkways: keep moving in order and do not stop there to take photographs. Secure loose bottles, keys and phones inside a bag; no flash or touching the artefacts. Toilets are identified at the west-cliff exit and below the plaza steps, not along the elevated walkways. Take care of practical needs before entering.

The archive images make the exposed setting easier to understand, but they do not certify today's route or safety arrangements. Follow the current barriers and staff directions. With children, discuss the no-running/no-dropping-objects rule before the climb. If stairs, heights or mobility limitations are a concern, ask staff for an access assessment; a sightseeing shuttle does not establish step-free access to the caves.

Timing and the last checks before departure

Book an available morning slot when it fits your travel plan, leaving room for the return transfer. Published seasonal hours are inconsistent across older pages and a newly reported October adjustment; we therefore do not reproduce an unconfirmed full-day timetable. The dated official booking slot and operator confirmation should govern your arrival, ticket-sales cutoff and last-entry deadline. Do not carry forward a summer extension into an autumn itinerary.

Check the operator's notices again before setting out, especially after adverse weather. Our weather-warning planning guide explains how to preserve a flexible day. Finally confirm four things: the ticket includes the caves you intend to see, your identity can be checked, the current route suits your party, and the return transport is workable. No photo or third-party package description overrides those checks.
