Last checked: 31 August 2026. The classic Li River cruise is a one-way scenic route from the Guilin side of the river to Yangshuo. It is not a short city boat ride, and it is not the same product as a bamboo-raft experience around Xingping or Yulong River. The practical version of the route begins at Mopanshan or Zhujiang Passenger Port and ends at Yangshuo's Longtoushan / Shuidongmen side after roughly 61 kilometres of river travel.

This is one of China's best landscape journeys when you plan its two ends properly: a pre-booked boat departure outside central Guilin, then an arrival in Yangshuo where you already know your hotel or onward transfer. Before purchasing non-refundable transport, check your entry plan with our China visa-free policy decision guide.

Choose the right Li River experience

Experience What it is Best for
Guilin-to-Yangshuo star-rated cruise The full scenic river journey from Mopanshan or Zhujiang Passenger Port to Yangshuo. First-time visitors who want the river as the main travel experience and will sleep in Yangshuo afterward.
Yangdi–Xingping raft or short river section A separate, shorter river product in the lower Li River area. Visitors already based near Xingping or Yangshuo who want a more compact outing.
Yulong River activity A different Yangshuo-area water experience, not the full Guilin-to-Yangshuo Li River route. Travellers with extra time after arriving in Yangshuo.

Book the full cruise if the journey itself is your priority. Do not buy a short rafting product expecting it to transport you from Guilin to Yangshuo.

Why the departure pier matters

The cruise does not normally start from a central Guilin riverside promenade. The official Li River route description identifies Mopanshan Passenger Port and Zhujiang Passenger Port as the Guilin-side departure points. Your exact pier depends on the ticket and vessel product, so save the Chinese pier name, not only “Li River cruise,” in your map app.

Build the morning in this order:

  1. Confirm the official ticket, departure pier, passenger identity and check-in instructions.
  2. Arrange the transfer from your Guilin hotel to that specific pier.
  3. Carry the original document used to make the booking.
  4. Bring only the luggage you are happy to manage through the Yangshuo arrival process.

Do not schedule a tight high-speed rail arrival, a city sightseeing visit and a same-morning cruise check-in. If Guilin is part of a longer route, read our China high-speed rail guide for foreign-passport holders before planning your station-to-pier transfer.

Book through the official Li River channel

The official scenic-area notice for the 2026 holiday period used the WeChat service account “Li River Ticket Office” (漓江售票处) for the Mopanshan/Zhujiang-to-Yangshuo star-rated cruise. Release windows and operating arrangements can change by season and demand, so use the official Li River Scenic Area booking channel for your exact date rather than an agent's screenshot or an old social-media post.

The most important checks are:

  • the named departure pier;
  • the vessel category and inclusions shown on the official booking;
  • the required identity document and passenger-name match;
  • the current boarding time and transfer instructions;
  • the arrival point in Yangshuo and your onward plan.

Chinese-language traveller questions commonly mix up “cruise ticket,” “pier transfer” and “Yangshuo bamboo raft” as if they are one purchase. Treat each as a separate service unless the official booking explicitly bundles it.

Make the cruise day your main activity

The route runs through the Li River's core karst scenery. The official scenic-area description lists landmarks including Yangdi scenery, Nine Horses Painted Hill, Yellow Cloth Shoal, Xingping scenery and the Yuanbao Mountain area associated with the image on the CNY 20 note. Conditions, commentary and visibility vary, so think of these as route landmarks rather than guaranteed stopovers.

Plan the day around the flow below:

Stage Practical decision
Night before Sleep in Guilin, charge your phone, save the correct pier and your Yangshuo hotel in Chinese, and pack a light waterproof layer.
Morning in Guilin Travel directly to the assigned pier with a buffer. Eat before boarding if the official ticket does not clearly state that a meal is included.
On the river Keep your camera ready, but do not spend the entire journey trying to identify every named peak. The scenery changes gradually; pause, look both sides of the river and follow crew safety instructions.
Yangshuo arrival Continue to a pre-booked hotel, or leave enough time for a verified onward transfer. Do not assume the landing point is beside every Yangshuo hotel or attraction.

Stay in Yangshuo after the cruise

A Guilin-to-Yangshuo cruise is most satisfying with at least one Yangshuo night afterward. It prevents the arrival from becoming a rushed transfer and gives you a genuine weather buffer if the river service changes. Choose accommodation based on what you want to do after landing:

  • Yangshuo town: useful for a simple first night, restaurants and an easy next-day departure.
  • Rural Yangshuo: better if you want a slower countryside stay, but confirm the final vehicle access and travel time from the landing point before booking.
  • Xingping: useful only if you deliberately want the Xingping section of the Li River next. It is not automatically the most convenient base after every Yangshuo cruise arrival.

Set up maps, translation and payment before leaving Guilin. In a rural hotel area, a saved Chinese address is much more useful than an English accommodation name. Our China phone, maps and payment setup guide covers the basics.

Weather and water level are real route variables

Do not treat the boat schedule as fixed months in advance. In summer 2026, the official Li River Scenic Area issued notices temporarily suspending and later restoring Li River vessels because of water conditions. That does not mean a cancellation is likely on your date; it means you need a flexible itinerary and an official check shortly before departure.

  • Do not book a non-changeable same-day flight, train or long-distance coach immediately after the cruise.
  • Check official notices the evening before and morning of departure.
  • Keep one flexible Yangshuo night if the river route is a key reason for visiting.
  • Bring rain protection and a dry bag or waterproof pouch for passport, phone and camera.

Families, accessibility and comfort

The full cruise is a good option for visitors who prefer scenery without a full hiking day, but it still involves pier check-in, boarding steps, a moving vessel and transport at both ends. Families should select the official vessel product that matches their seating and meal needs, carry children’s essentials rather than relying on pier shops, and avoid stacking an energetic cycling or rafting activity directly after arrival.

If you have limited mobility, ask the official operator or your hotel about the current boarding arrangement at the named pier before purchase. Do not assume that “cruise” means fully step-free from taxi to cabin.

Common mistakes to avoid

  1. Booking “Li River” without checking the start and end points. The full Guilin-to-Yangshuo cruise is a one-way route.
  2. Confusing the star-rated cruise with a bamboo raft. They are different products, routes and logistics.
  3. Going to the wrong pier. Mopanshan and Zhujiang are not interchangeable unless the operator tells you so.
  4. Planning a tight departure from Yangshuo. Water conditions, boarding, landing and local transfers all need margin.
  5. Buying an unofficial “guaranteed” ticket. Use the official Li River channel and retain the confirmed booking record.
  6. Returning straight to Guilin after arrival. If possible, sleep in Yangshuo and let the route end naturally.

The Li River cruise is best viewed as a transfer with scenery, not a city excursion. Once you have a confirmed pier, a flexible weather plan and an overnight in Yangshuo, it becomes one of the easiest ways to experience Guangxi's karst landscape without turning the day into a chain of rushed connections.
