Summer Palace, Beijing: Gates, Tickets and a Manageable First Visit
Last checked: 22 October 2026. The Summer Palace (颐和园, Yiheyuan) is best treated as a half-day landscape visit with a deliberate choice of gate and paid interiors. Do not buy the most inclusive ticket automatically, then try to walk every shoreline and climb every staircase. Choose whether your priority is the lake, architecture or the hill before leaving your hotel.
Choose the visit that fits your energy
| Your priority | Suggested time inside | How to keep it manageable |
|---|---|---|
| Lake views and a first impression | About 3 hours | Start at East Palace Gate and focus on the eastern buildings and Long Corridor; turn back before fatigue sets in. |
| Architecture plus paid interiors | 4–5 hours | Choose the interiors first and work backwards from their earlier closing time. |
| A long landscape walk | Most of a day | Leave other major attractions for another day; carry water and retain a walking exit plan. |
This is a good choice for travellers who enjoy gardens, architectural details and time outdoors. It is less suited to squeezing into a gap between two timed city-centre reservations. Place it within your broader Beijing travel plan as a principal activity rather than an incidental stop.
Match the metro station to the gate
The park's official visitor guide pairs East Palace Gate (东宫门) with Xiyuan (西苑), Metro Lines 4/16, and North Palace Gate (北宫门) with Beigongmen (北宫门), Line 4. The west entrance is served by the Xijiao line. Save the gate name, not just “Summer Palace,” in your navigation app.
For the walking plan below, choose East Palace Gate. Do not exit at Beigongmen simply because its name sounds like the attraction: it is a different starting point. Check the final walk from your chosen station on the day; this guide does not promise a fixed walking time. Our Beijing subway guide explains ticketing and foreign-card options.
Buy the ticket for the areas you will actually enter
The Beijing municipal visitor page confirms foreign-passport booking through the park's official WeChat account. Its attraction ticketing directory also lists ticket-office sales. Bring the passport used to book; online availability and your selected date remain decisive. For help with unfamiliar reservation forms, see our foreign-passport attraction booking checklist.
| Season | Park admission | Combined ticket |
|---|---|---|
| April–October | 30 | 60 |
| November–March | 20 | 50 |
The combined ticket adds the separately ticketed attractions. Individual supplements are Dehe Garden 5, Tower of Buddhist Incense 10, Suzhou Street 10 and the museum 20. Compare your intended stops with the extra 30 RMB for the combined option. A lake-and-corridor visit does not need every interior.
Plan around two closing times, not one
April–October park hours are 06:00–20:00, last entry 19:00; November–March, 06:30–19:00, last entry 18:00. The four ticketed inner attractions close earlier: 18:00/17:00 respectively, with admission ending 30 minutes before. They normally close Mondays except designated major holidays. Check announcements before buying an interior-focused ticket.
An early park entry is therefore useful for a landscape walk, not proof that every exhibition or building is open. For an afternoon visit, do the paid areas you care about first. November's cheaper ticket also comes with a shorter inner-attraction window; do not carry an October schedule into a November booking.
A focused East Gate walking plan

Use East Palace Gate as both the start and a simple return point. Begin with the eastern architectural area, then follow the signed route toward the Long Corridor and Marble Boat. The park's published accessible routes connect East Gate, Renshou Hall, Leshou Hall, Long Corridor and Marble Boat. This gives a useful backbone without committing you to a complete lake circuit.
Our suggested approach is an out-and-back walk along the sections you enjoy, with time reserved for photographs and rests. Treat the Hall of Jade Ripples photograph here as an architectural detail to look for, not a promise of interior access. If climbing is your priority, allocate a separate block for the hill rather than adding it to an already ambitious shoreline walk.
Boats and mobility: keep an independent exit plan

The Marble Boat is the boat-shaped architectural landmark shown here, not your passenger ferry. Operational boat services are seasonal and weather-dependent; the park warns that adverse conditions can suspend them. Do not make a boat crossing essential to reaching your exit before closing.
The official accessible-route page distinguishes a roughly 6.96 km gentler loop from a shorter 2.565 km route that includes hill roads. Shorter does not necessarily mean easier. Wheelchair loans are limited, with a 500 RMB deposit; ask the gate service team about the route and equipment before setting off. A shorter return walk is a valid visit, especially with children or a traveller who needs frequent rests.
